MCC Alberta's CD Fundraiser Initiative

In 2002, Kim Thiessen was asked by someone in her church to make a CD of lullabies for a new granddaughter.  In short order, Kim's home church, Foothills Mennonite Church in Calgary, had raised money to cover recording costs and she was off to Winnipeg to record a CD with Darryl Neustaedter Barg. It was to be a fundraiser for Mennonite Central Committee's program that supports those affected by HIV/AIDS... Four CDs, close to 40,000 units sold, and approaching $750,000 raised, this musical project with humble beginnings continues.

MCC Alberta is thrilled to announce the release of Kim Thiessen & Darryl Neustaedter Barg's new CD, "Even in the Smallest Places". The album was partly recorded with MCC Partners in El Salvador and Guatemala. These partners are working in places of violence and conflict, but are using music to reclaim peace in their communities. The songs on the CD speak to despair and sadness but also to the hope and faith that can be found, always and "Even in the Smallest Places"

CD release celebrations will take place this October and November 2013 in Manitoba, Saskatchewan & Alberta. Issues of HIV/AIDS are still a focus, but the realization that issues of migration and peacemaking are crucial in the fight against the disease, are coming into focus with this work.

Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is an ecumenical global networker among innovative Christian leaders.  Brian graciously gave permission for Kim and Darryl, and the choirs from Guatemala and El Salvador, to record his song "With Kindness" and to include it on the 5th cd at no cost.
