MCC Alberta Highlights of 2011

Cycle for Life Kenya: 7 Albertans traveled to Kenya to bike and promote Peace and HIV/AIDS work being done across the country. Cycle for Life Alberta: raised $238 000 for AIDS. Cycle for Life Blog The Calgary Thrift Store topped $1 million in sales and the Lethbridge Thrift Store purchased a new store building Kim Thiessen and Darryl Neustaedter Barg performed 45 times at Concerts for AIDS in BC, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta. Concerts, speakers, and conferences that brought together MCC with EMCN (Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers), Ten Thousand Villages, and MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates). Almost 400 people a month visit the Taber MCC Services for Low German Mennonites. Most are looking for employment or help with documentation and resettlement issues. Restorative Justice Ministries hosted Shannon Moroney for the launch of her book "Through the Glass", which is about crime, forgiveness, accountability, and the abuse of children. RJM Webpage A prisoner from Bowden Institution used his first Escorted Temporary Absence opportunity to come visit our office. We celebrated the birth of Iliana and Tim Friesen's son Aaron, and the move of Orlando and Rosita Vasquez which brought Orlando from Edmonton into our Calgary office. The constituency donated almost $50 000 to sponsor two Iraqi families to settle in Alberta. More info on Refugee Sponsorship
Youth and Young Adults continue to participate! 55 youth learned about urban poverty in our CASA program (Community Awareness through Service and Action). 7 young adults spent a month serving and learning in South Africa. Youth and Young Adult Programs More than 7600 kits and blankets were shipped from the Alberta warehouse. Many thanks to the 150+ people who volunteered at Material Resources center and countless others across the province who spent their time making blankets and collecting items for kits! Not only did Alberta make budget... we overshot it by $130 000! We are very thankful.
Stories of refugee experiences from Prussia, Ukraine, Colombia and Laos were shared in the well attended story telling event, "Different Worlds, Same Story."
